It’s easy to arrive in Zanzibar expecting turquoise water, white sand and nothing much else. And, to be fair, the beaches absolutely deliver. But what stayed with me was everything around them. Wandering through the narrow streets of Stone Town, passing carved wooden doors and tiny shops, then later finding yourself on a completely different coastline with nothing but palms, warm water and the sound of the ocean. We spent time exploring rather than just staying in one place, and that made the island feel so much bigger than the typical tropical escape. One of my favourite things about Zanzibar was how quickly the atmosphere could change. A busy street in Stone Town. A boat heading out across the Indian Ocean. A quiet stretch of beach at sunset. It felt like several different trips rolled into one island. And somewhere between all of that, it became one of those places I knew I’d remember long after I’d left.
Pass it on
Worth knowing
Zanzibar is much more than its beaches. Give yourself time to explore beyond the coast.
Don't miss
Spend some time in Stone Town before heading off to the quieter beaches.
Best time
June–October is generally a great period for warm, relatively dry weather. December–February is another popular window.
Watch out
The tides can be dramatic around Zanzibar. A beach that looks completely different at low tide can be almost unrecognisable later in the day.
What surprised me
How much character there is beyond the postcard beaches.
Would I go back?
Absolutely. I’d want to see more of the island next time.
