A landscape so powerful, you feel it before you see it. There is a point along the Zambezi River where the landscape suddenly gives way. Water gathers momentum, rushes over a vast basalt ledge and plunges into a deep, narrow gorge. The impact sends clouds of mist into the air, sometimes rising so high that the falls can be seen from miles away. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders” — Victoria Falls is less a single viewpoint than an entire landscape shaped by water, time and immense natural force. Here, the river doesn’t simply flow through the land. It has carved its way through it. Standing at the edge of a world this powerful is a reminder that some places are difficult to capture in a photograph. You can record the view, but the sound, the spray and the sheer scale are another experience entirely.
Pass it on
Don't miss
Look beyond the main curtain of water and take in the gorge itself. The scale of the landscape becomes much clearer when you see how the Zambezi has cut through the rock over time. If conditions allow, explore more than one viewpoint.
Watch out
The spray can be intense, particularly when water levels are high. Expect wet paths, slippery surfaces and reduced visibility at some viewpoints. Protect your camera and phone, wear shoes with good grip, and check local conditions before visiting.
Worth knowing
Victoria Falls straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The experience can be quite different on each side, with different viewpoints and perspectives of the falls. If you have time, research access arrangements before deciding where to stay or which side to visit.
Would I go back?
Victoria Falls feels like the kind of place that deserves more than one visit. You want to experience the immense power of the high water season, then return during a quieter period when the mist lifts and the details of the gorge emerge.
What surprised me
A waterfall that changes its entire personality The surprising thing about Victoria Falls is that it isn’t quite the same landmark throughout the year.
Best time
March to May is generally the most dramatic period to witness Victoria Falls, when seasonal high water transforms the Zambezi into a tremendous curtain of falling water.
