Plitvice Lakes looks almost impossibly polished: sixteen lakes connected by waterfalls and cascades, surrounded by dense forest. But the landscape isn’t finished. The lakes exist because of a remarkable natural process called tufa formation. Minerals carried by the water gradually accumulate around mosses, algae and other organisms, creating porous limestone barriers. Those barriers grow and change, forming new cascades and altering the lakes over time. It’s a landscape that is still being created today — which makes the view feel less like a finished attraction and more like a moment in an ongoing geological process.

Worth knowing
Plitvice has 16 named lakes, divided into Upper and Lower Lakes.
What surprised me
The tufa barriers creating the lakes are still actively growing today.
Don't miss
The park offers routes ranging from roughly 2 hours to full-day hikes, so it’s worth choosing a route rather than simply following the crowds.
Watch out
The paths can be narrow and uneven, with wooden bridges; visitors are required to stay on marked trails.
