Planning Machu Picchu in September

Aug 25, 2026

September is one of the more appealing months to visit Machu Picchu, sitting towards the end of the dry season while avoiding some of the busiest peak-season pressure. But “best month” depends on what you actually want from the visit. If your priority is better weather and clearer mountain views, September is a strong candidate. The dry season generally gives you a better chance of stable conditions, although mountain weather is never guaranteed. The bigger thing to plan around is altitude and the overall pace of the trip. Machu Picchu itself sits lower than Cusco, but most itineraries involve spending time at altitude beforehand. Don’t treat the visit as simply arriving, seeing the ruins and leaving — give yourself enough time to acclimatise. For a two-week Peru trip, we’d also resist the temptation to cram every possible attraction into the itinerary. Machu Picchu deserves enough breathing room that you’re not experiencing it exhausted from constant transfers.

Pass it on

Best time

September is a particularly good compromise if you want relatively favourable weather without travelling during the busiest part of the dry season.

Don't miss

The early morning experience. If your schedule allows, getting to Machu Picchu early gives you the chance to experience the site before the day becomes more intense and crowded.

Worth knowing

The journey is part of the experience. Depending on your route, you’ll likely combine transport through the Sacred Valley with the final approach to Machu Picchu. Don’t underestimate the time involved when building your itinerary.

Watch out

Altitude. Your body may care more about your time in Cusco and the surrounding highlands than Machu Picchu itself. Build acclimatisation into the trip rather than treating it as an afterthought.

What surprised me

How much the experience depends on when you arrive and how you approach it, rather than simply choosing the “right” month. A perfectly timed September visit can still feel rushed if the rest of the itinerary is overloaded.

Would I go back?

Absolutely. But I’d prioritise time and pace over trying to squeeze every possible experience into the trip.
